What Michelle Obama told us: Reflections (and photos) from the Democratic National Convention

Over the years, I’ve been to many conventions, but to be in the arena as part of the California delegation during this week’s Chicago DNC Convention moved me like no other to do everything possible to elect Kamala Harris as our next President

It was wonderful to spend time with former legislative colleagues and elected officials from across our country all committed to moving America forward.

I will never forget Barack Obama reminding us of the power of hope. Hillary Clinton describing the arc of the history of women in American politics. Warriors coach Steve Kerr mimicking Steph Curry’s “night, night” to Donald Trump. Tim Walz coaching us that Americans must look out for each other with the spirit of how we care for families and neighbors. Everyday Americans sharing the devastating losses of loved ones to gun violence and of reproductive freedoms. And of course, Kamala’s unforgettable acceptance speech.

With a refrain repeated throughout the week, Michelle Obama told us that anyone who cares about our democracy needs to “do something.” 80,000 votes across 3 states elected Donald Trump President; four years later, 81,000 votes across 4 states elected Joe Biden. In the most important election of our lifetimes, with 73 days to go, no one wants to wake up on November 6 and wonder what more we could have done.

Twenty-one years ago, I was a member of the kitchen cabinet for Kamala’s first campaign for San Francisco District Attorney. Several of us who were part of that effort are hosting a San Francisco fundraiser for Kamala on September 5 – “Bring The Joy SF” (invite below, and you can RSVP here). Whether or not you can come, please make a contribution here

My ask to each of you – please do something. Our country depends on everyone doing our part.

In solidarity,

David
