new Era: a Renaissance for SF LIVE music

Music has always been an important part of my life. Growing up, my dad taught me the violin, and I played in many orchestras, pit bands, churches and weddings. While legal briefs take up most of my time these days, I occasionally get to play Motown classics on my electric violin with some of our Bay Area’s civil rights lawyers in the Coolerators band.

Part of why I love San Francisco is our live music scene. Our city has been part of our country’s musical history, and we have nurtured amazing talent. While in the Legislature during COVID and the ensuing recession, I heard from many voices in our music, entertainment and nightlife communities that San Francisco’s music scene was in danger, which is why I championed $2.5M in the state budget to provide a post-pandemic boost to those worlds.

I’m very excited that with that funding, along with those communities, Mayor Breed and I just announced SF Live – a six-month series of free, live concerts coming to San Francisco, starting May 4.

From electronic beats at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell to former members of hometown-icon Carlos Santana’s band at Civic Center Plaza, from indie rock and jazz ensembles to hip-hop and funk acts, there will be an enormous mix of musical genres at parks, plazas and entertainment venues throughout our city. The first eight shows have already been announced, and more will be added throughout the summer.

Much thanks to the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development, Illuminate, San Francisco Parks Alliance, Noise Pop and Union Square Alliance for teaming up to produce this incredible series of events, as well as the musicians and entertainment venues who will be participating.

We’re bringing San Francisco out to enjoy the best music our city has to offer. I can’t wait for the whole concert series, and look forward to seeing you and your friends at one of our free events.  Take a moment to find one near you.

Rock on!
