As we’ve been learning about J.D. Vance, a Yale Law School graduate and former San Francisco resident, I couldn’t help but think about how his record compares to the work of the lawyers in my office. The contrast could not be more clear.
J.D. Vance celebrated the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, opposed abortion rights even in cases of rape or incest, and has supported a national abortion ban. In contrast, my office teamed up with the Bar Association of San Francisco to organize the Legal Alliance for Reproductive Rights, a network of 70 law firms providing pro bono services for those seeking and providing abortions.
J.D. Vance has campaigned on demonizing immigrants, finishing construction of a border wall, and has said the U.S. should conduct “large-scale deportations.” In contrast, my office challenged a Trump-era xenophobic wealth test for immigrants in a case that went up to the Supreme Court and won, while successfully defending San Francisco’s status as a sanctuary city.
J.D. Vance opposes same-sex marriages, introduced a bill to criminalize gender-affirming care, and has referred to LGBTQ+ people and their allies as “groomers.” In contrast, my office successfully championed the national legal fight for marriage equality.
We need to do everything possible to ensure J.D. Vance is not our next Vice President. But it’s also important that leaders are ready for whatever may happen this November. We need experienced leaders ready to fight in the courts to stand up for your rights.
I’m running for re-election because the stakes are so high, and we need tough, experienced leaders ready to meet the moment. I hope I can count on your support with a donation to my re-election campaign.
In solidarity,
David
