Assemblymember David Chiu (D – San Francisco) today issued the following statement after the Supreme Court ruled to allow the Trump Administration to move forward with its “public charge” rule:
“With this decision, the Supreme Court has made clear that the United States no longer accepts ‘your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’
The public charge rule is callous and is a blatant attempt to force people of color into poverty. It seems the American dream is now only available to those who were born into the same privilege as our President.
In California, we will find solutions to protect and uplift our significant population of immigrants who have built our economy and made our country great.”
